Distance Learning MA in “Advanced Japanese Studies”

I consulted a google mailing list “Honyaku” (for translators of Japanese and English) for some advice about what kind of certifications I could study for, or if there were any correspondence or night classes that I could take to increase my edumacation. They gave me a few suggestions that I’ve been looking over and thinking about. The one that looks the most useful (but also the most challenging and expensive for time and money) is a Distance learning MA from “The University of Sheffield” in the UK.

The program seems to be a 3 year part time program, the cost is 1,650,000 yen over 3 years (as of last year… this may have changed for the next set of 3 years for the program).

Just gotta talk to the wife, and the rents and see what everyone thinks about this….

Pirates 3 SUCKS. (And its the writers’ faults)

My wife and I went to see Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End last Saturday….

…If you have not yet gone to see it…and you have any sort of soft spot for romance and happy endings in movies… then DON’T GO!!!!

Until I figure out how to put text behind a link, I will wait to  give out any plot details.

I understand those of you who saw #2 and are aching to see how it ends… just hold on a little longer and wait for the cheap seats or wait for it to come out on video. Its really not worth it. #2 was a disaster… one big long middle… lots of nonsense… pretty much just a trap to make us all want to watch #3. And now they say there’s a 4th on the way!

Well Disney… NOT THIS TIME!!! I’m not falling for it. I’m not gonna go see it. I knew this Pirates thing was a fluke. Yeah, “Curse of the Black Pearl” was a great movie… I was really surprised since almost every other Disney live action film SUCKS THE DONKEY’S SWEATY BALLS! … But I liked Pirates #1… But it obviously was NOT written to be a trilogy… or a quadrilogy?? … or some big long series its turning out to be.

Once I figure out this hidden text behind a link thing I’ll post some of my comments about what sucked and why. Just know that the ending of the movie nearly broke my poor little heart. It ruined my faith in romantic happy endings (yes as a Man, I still enjoy happy romantic luvy duvy endings)… and it kept me awake two nights in a row worrying about the ending. And just to note: to those who haven’t seen it (those who care have most likely already gone to see it…but oh well maybe I can save just one)  the movie doesn’t end in complete romantical disaster… just way way way way less happy than previous “Disney”  happy endings have let me to expect and hope for.

This movie left a bad taste in my mouth and a scar in my soul…. boo.

The last straw for (from?) China…

読売新聞 (Yomiuri Newspaper) 6月16日土曜日より、(6/16, Saturday) ”中国産毒歯磨き粉” (Poisonous Chinese Toothpaste)

This time, the latest dangerous product coming out of China is Toothpaste that KILLS! (日本語記事) (English article at Forbes.com)Theres just been too much bad food, too many bad products, and too much bad news coming out of China for me to handle anymore.

I used to buy the cheapest vegetables at the grocery store and the cheapest products and it didn’t matter to me where they came from because I expected them to be safe. But theres the poison pet food、about a year or so ago there was Kimuchi (spicy picked chinese cabbage-a korean food) made in China that had eggs from some kind of bug in it(Japanese only), when I look at the cheap chinese mushrooms they’ve got mold on them (can mushrooms have mold??).

From now on I’m spending more money to get Japanese products or at the least, products NOT made in China if at all possible (I still trust Taiwan… don’t worry.) I’m going to be much more careful about products that me or my wife ingest, and when it comes to electronics and other products made in China I’ve already been shying away from buying anything big (TVs/Computers/etc.) that were made in China.

You never know what’s going to be found next… I suggest anyone else reading this be more careful too. China’s gonna have to change its ways before I start giving it my dollar or yen from now on.

(Yes I realize some Chinese products I can’t avoid… but I can at least try).

EDIT:

Here’s another one!  from June 27th…

Getting your Japanese Drivers License

Posted on June 4th, 2007 by dink.

A few months ago I finally got my Japanese Drivers License (after having lived here for almost 2 years already). My international license was long expired and although I still don’t have a car, I figured that having a License would probably be handy for many things. (Like, that way I don’t have to present my Gaijin card <外国人登録証明書> all the time… the license is more normal).

When I embarked on my journey to getting my license. I noticed that the internet is sorely lacking for up to date, complete, accurate, and helpful guides in English. So… I decided to make one. So go HERE to check out what I’ve got so far… Might take a few days/weeks to make it complete.

If you think theres some information missing that you would like to know or that you think I should include to make this a better guide, let me know by commenting.
